War Horse Film Review REVISED

"War Horse", directed by Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg, is a movie based on a novel with the same name, written by Michael Morpurgo. This film falls into a few categories, such as historical drama and family movie, as it focuses on World War I and is suitable for alla ges. The main character, Albert Narracott (Jeremy Irvine), is a young and kind boy from Devon who loves his brave and beautiful male thoroughbred, foal, Joey. His father is Ted Narracott, an old man with a drinking problem who is a veteran from the Boer War.
The story begins when ALbert Narracott witnesses the birth of a thoroughbred foal. Some time later, Ted Narracott goes into town to buy a plowing horse in an auction, but he takes an interest in the same young thoroughbred ALbert saw. He brings him home after bidding a high price for the colt, and his wife, Rose Narracott (Emily Watson), isn't happy. Albert, however, is very happy to see the horse, and soon becomes bounded to it. He names the horse Joey. He trains Joey to respond to his calls and to plow the rocky grounds. But sixteen-year-old Albert soon becomes separated from Joey when their crops failed and they need money to pay their debt. Ted sells Joey to Captain Nicholls, a bright and clever british soldier. Joey is now a war horse, and Albert promises that Joey and he will meet once again. After being seperated from each other, they both face different difficulties and challenges. Will Albert be able to fulfill his promise and be together with Joey once more?
The background music fits perfectly for every scene in the movie. For example, during the scene of teaching Joey to respond to calls, the background music starts softly When Albert starts to run, the music turns faster and jumpier, giving a playful tune. The music changes to a tense background music when the soldiers prepare to charge. It becomes soft yet strong, and gets faster as the battle reaches its climax, then slows down as the scene ends. It gives the feeling that the music follows everything that happens in the movie. John Williams, the composer of War Horse soundtrack, is a genius. The costumes designed by Joanna Johnston are very realistic. The costumes fit the characters very well. For example, Rose wears a beautiful, long, pale pink dress, and it gives off the feeling of a normal English woman. Another example is Emilie's costume. She wears a bright yellow dress, and the bright yellow dress creates a feeling of a cheerful and young French girl.
War Horse is a highly enjoyable and suspenseful movie. Watchers of all ages will not regret watching this movie. It really captures how people on different sides of World War I feel, and it’s definitely a first-rate movie. I strongly recommend it. Don’t miss it!

REFLECTION//Argumentative Essays and Debates

This unit, we learned about argumentative essays and debates. For argumentative essay, we wrote an argumentative essay about a topic that we chose our self. In an argumentative essay. In an argumentative essay, there should be introduction paragraph which is kind of background information, and end the introduction with a thesis sentence/statement that should include two reasons. There should also be a format in the body paragraph, which is either pro-pro-con or con-con-pro. After writing the body paragraph, we should write the conclusion paragraph, which summarizes the essay and restates the thesis statement in a different way. It's also called paraphrasing the thesis statement. After the conclusion paragraph, you should put a citation list. The citation should use APA format. The reference list should be written on a separate page, not on the same page as the essay. I think that I wrote a good enough thesis statement and conclusion paragraph. The format of the body paragraph was also clear, and I disproved the possible counter argument. However, I think that my thesis statement still needed to be clearer, more straight to the point, shorter, and more specific. My arguments in the body paragraph still wasn't enough, especially the data about the chairs and tables in the cafeteria and number of secondary students.
In the debate topic, we had to do a debate in a team. My teammates were Aura, Sania, and Thomas. Thomas was the first speaker, followed by Aura, then Sania, and me. I did the rebuttal. Our debate topic was "Will globalization lead to a brighter future?", and we were on the opposition team. The affirmative team consisted of Denisa, Dinda, Phoebe, and Willy. I think what I did well was the preparation and the arguments. The collaboration was good too, since we helped each other write the arguments. However, I'm not good at expressing and talking, especially in public, so I think that didn't go so well. I also talked too long, more than the appropriate time. I had difficulties rebutting, especially because I'm not really good at thinking quickly without research and I'm not good at speaking either.

To the Cafeteria and Beyond

The cafeteria is one of the most important places in Sekolah Victory Plus. Most teachers and secondary students spend their break time and lunch time in the cafeteria. Every lunch period, the cafeteria is always full of students and teachers who are eating their lunch. One of the main reasons as to why the cafeteria is always full is because students are not allowed to eat inside the class, or in any area outside the cafeteria. Because of this, a lot of students experience difficulties in looking for an empty table because the cafeteria becomes full very quickly. In order to solve this issue, SVP secondary students should be allowed to eat outside the cafeteria area because the current space is not big enough, and the space could be used more effectively.
First of all, the current space of SVP cafeteria is not big enough. There are over 300 secondary students, but there are only about 200 chairs. The secondary students’ eating area is restricted to the cafeteria. However, due to the little space in the cafeteria, most students who are dismissed late, or for some reason arrive at the cafeteria late, experience difficulties in finding seats. If students were allowed to eat outside the cafeteria, then it wouldn't be as difficult for the latecomers to find a place to eat. During an interview, a La Myra Bening, a ninth grader, said, “I find it difficult to get a seat in the cafeteria during lunch, because every time I get there, it’s always crowded. I would like it if we were allowed to eat outside the cafeteria, preferably in front of the library.” Another ninth grader, Nadya Prasetyo, agreed to this statement. She also added, “It’s very difficult. Even if you arrive just a little late, there’s no hope for eating in the cafeteria.”
Another reason is the fact that the space outside the cafeteria could be used more effectively. There are lots of space that students can occupy during lunch time, such as the tables and chairs outside Grade 9 Everest and the picnic furniture that used to be outside the library. However, students are not allowed to eat there, which often make the tables look useless, because no one eats on it. If secondary students were allowed to eat there, then the space would look more useful, and we can make better use of the furniture and school facilities.
Teachers often say that if students eat outside the cafeteria, then the school janitors would need to clean a wider range of mess. Nevertheless, students should learn to clean their own mess. They can use this opportunity to improve their awareness on cleanliness and hygiene, because they need to clean their own mess. From this experience, students would be able to attain the sense of responsibility and learn to be more responsible.
The above evidence shows that allowing students to have their meal time outside the cafeteria would help them find an eating location faster and that it can make better use of the unoccupied space and facilities. Aside from that, students will also be able to learn how to be responsible, clean and tidy. Therefore, students should be allowed to eat in different parts of the school.

Ahmad Dani Should Be Held Responsible

Ahmad Abdul "Dul" Qodir's car accident, which killed 7 people and injured others, had been a hot topic in Indonesia, especially because the driver himself was underage, and the son of a famous singer, Ahmad Dani. There had been a lot of debates on who should be held responsible - the boy himself, or his father. Ahmad Dani must be held responsible, because as a father, he knows more than his son about driving and the laws of driving in Indonesia.
First of all, his father was the one who told his 13 year old son to take his girlfriend home, even though he knew that it's against Indonesia's driving regulations. In Indonesia, every driver must always bring their driving license (also known as SIM in Indonesia), which they can validly acquire after passing the driving test at the earliest age of 17. Letting someone who is 4 years younger than the legitimate age shows disrespect towards Indonesian road and safety regulations, as well as being irresponsible towards his son's actions.
Another reason why he should be held responsible is because as a father, he has control over what his son can and cannot do. Generally, when people have a child, especially young children, they would do their best to control their children and show them what is wrong and what is right. If they are bout to do something wrong, or suggesting a bad idea, they would tell them that it's a bad idea, and sometimes even give advice. For example, if their son was on a date or with his girlfriend, they should tell them not to go back too late. And in this case, his son was driving very late at night after driving his girlfriend back home.
Some people think that it is actually Dul's fault for driving underage, and at night, too. I understand this point of view. However, Ahmad Dani has the rights as a father to stop his son from doing something wrong. However, it was actually Dul's father himself that asked Dul to drive his girlfriend home. Therefore, Dul was actually following his father's orders, not disobeying them.
Although there are objections, the evidence above shows that Ahmad Dani played a very big role in the accident, especially because he knows about driving and road regulations in Indonesia. He knows about the legitimate driving age and did not make sure that his son follows the rules. Therefore, he must be held responsible for the accident.

Report to the Police Chief

To the honorable Chief
Ms Megan Hoddinott

On the 12th of August, 1973, we received a call from a woman named Mrs Queenie Volupides. She called us to report her husband, Mr Arthur Volupides’ possible death. We arrived at around 2 a.m.
When we arrived at the scene, Mrs Volupides was standing next to her husband’s body. We entered her house and proceeded with the investigation. We saw Mr Volupides lying on his back on the floor, his feet on the stairs, facing up, and his head was on the carpet, facing up as well. The next thing we noticed was that the banister is on his left side going down the stairs, and he is holding his glass in his left hand as well. The glass wasn’t broken. At the time, we noticed that there were no emergency respondents present. The carpets and the ornaments by the staircase have not been disturbed. And last, we thought there was someone that was-and is still-cooking when we were in the house.
We had a short interrogation with Mrs Volupides. She admitted that she had an argument with her husband, and ran out to the country club, where a party was going on. She left shortly before one in the morning, and invited a few friends to follow her home and have one more drink.  They got to the Volupides house about ten minutes after Mrs Volupides, where she greeted them and said, “Something terrible happened.  Arthur slipped and fell on the stairs.  He was coming down for another drink-he still had the glass in his hand-and I think he’s dead.  Oh, my God-what shall I do?” We came with Mrs Volupides to the hospital to have the victim autopsied. The autopsy conducted later concluded that Arthur died from a wound on the head and confirmed that he’d been drunk.
We later investigated the evidences and compared them with Mrs Volupides’ testimony. First of all, Mrs Volupides said that her husband fell on the way down to get another drink, and he still had the glass in his hand. However, the glass wasn’t broken. As a rule, when people fall downstairs usually they will let go objects they’re holding and it will be broken, especially some kind of glasswares. The glass was in Mr Volupides’ left hand where the banister is also in Mr Volupides’ left side going down. We found this odd because usually, people hold the banister while going down the stairs. Next, the position of Mr Volupides’ body was peculiar. Mrs Volupides said that his husband slipped and fell down the stairs. We found this odd, because people usually fall face first, but Mr Volupides’ face was facing up. We also found it odd that someone’s cooking during that hour, because usually people cook at reasonable time, such as for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We also noticed how there were no emergency respondents present. Usually, when people noticed someone unconscious, they would immediately call for an ambulance. The last thing that seemed odd was that the carpet on the stairs and the items on the wall remained undisturbed. When people slip downstairs, the staples holding the carpet will be detached due to the force given by feet as they try to stop falling. The same rule applies to the items on the wall. Some of the objects should have fallen or changed in position because people usually try to stop themselves from falling by seizing the nearest object, in this case, ornaments on the wall, such as the lamps, mirrors, and candle stands.
With evidences unsupporting Mrs Volupides’ testimony, we concluded that she was lying. We recommend further and deeper interrogation session with Mrs Volupides, informing her that her claims are controversial towards our evidence. Therefore, we need to taker her into custody on suspicion of manslaughter. This is what we think might have happened based on the evidences: Mrs Volupides had a fight with her husband while they were planning to go out together, because her husband got drunk. Mr Volupides tried to hurt her due to his angry, drunk state, so she hit her husband with a frying pan in defense. Then, she went to the club because she felt guilty. There, she thought of ways to cover for her crime. After coming up with a plan, she went home to initiate the plan. She set it up to look like he fell, and used the frying pan to cook to get rid of traces of blood. Then, she called her friends so that she would have some people who support her alibi.

What I Have Learned

This LB unit was a very fun unit for me. We learned a lot about blogging and commenting. We posted all kinds of different posts, starting from information, comparison, pictures, movie and book reviews, tips and tricks, and a lot of other things. But we didn't only learn about how to post, we learnt so many things.

First of all, we learnt about online safety. We must monitor our blogs to make sure that no one is commenting bad things to us or planning to do bad things to us or to our blog. And to make sure of this, we must also be aware of what kind of information we can post online. For example, it's fine for you to tell people about what you thought about that book you read yesterday, but you should not tell people your phone number, or your address. You wouldn't want people to come in front of your door telling you that they're your online friend coming for a visit, and then have all your stuff stolen by your "online friend", now, do you?

Another thing I've learned is that we can share a lot of things when we want to blog, such as medias (photos, files, videos, music), opinions, tips and tricks, ideas, news, information, and much more. This way, people can read our post and they might gain inspiration, or new knowledge, and sharing knowledge to others is a good thing, isn't it?

The next thing I learned was how to be creative. When you want to post something, make sure that you're using a language that is suitable for the age of the readers you are writing for to make sure that they will understand easily. Also, if you would like to make your post more interesting, then you can add pictures or links to related videos. Remember: it's good if you write about things you like, but you can't write about the same things on and on, you need to have a diversity in your blog. For example, you can write about planets, but make sure that not all your posts are about planets. Maybe you'd like to write about the movie that's about to come out next week, or tips and tricks you discovered on your own. You can also change your template once in a while, just to freshen up your blog.

Be active as a blogger, which means that don't suddenly disappear into nothingness and leave your blog's followers hanging! Be sure to keep your blog fresh by changing the templates, posting something, or reading and commenting on others' blogs! This way, you'll gain information or many interesting knowledge from other bloggers and other posts, and create interaction and connection with others!

Being a blogger has been quite a fun experience for me. I think my blog was diverse enough, the content in each posts are talking about different topics. I also have downloaded templates I like from other websites and applied it on my blog. However, I still need to improve a lot. I think I need to be more active in posting and commenting. I haven't commented on too many blogs as of yet, and I haven't been reading the new posts that come into my reading list. So, I think I need to improve on this. I also think I need to write less and know when to stop writing (like in this post, for example, it's really long). I need to adjust my blog's language as well.

Miracle of Endymion~

Hi everyone! I'm currently watching this anime movie that came out in February 2013, but since I don't live in Japan, I couldn't watch it then, so I waited until it was uploaded online a few days ago. The movie is called The Miracle of Endymion. This movie is set in Academy City, a city where people have 'abilities' that can be scientifically explained. In the beginning, the movie explains that Academy City has nearly completed their plan to build an elevator to space. The two main characters, Touma and Index, met a soon-to-debut singer called Arisa. They spent time with her in the afternoon until night, and suddenly, a magician called Stiyl and his three apprentices attacked them. Reinforcements from Academy City came, and the magicians retreated. Just before they retreated, Stiyl said to Touma, "That girl could likely cause a war between the magic side and the science side." What does Stiyl mean? What connection does Arisa have with Endymion Space Elevator? I can't tell you, I haven't finished watching the movie.

SPOILER ALERT!

Panic, Panic, PANIC!

This morning, I learnt a very good lesson. And guess who-or what-taught me that lesson? It was this laptop and this blog. I've always been a very careless person, and I usually don't think much when I'm doing something. And this time, I was deleting the empty blogs I accidentally made when we first opened blogger.com. And guess what-I wasn't thinking, just kept on pressing settings => others => delete blog, on and on. And I ended up deleting four out of five of my blogs. I deleted both "Ella's Type Center" and "Ella's Writing Center", "My Math Stuffs", and "My Science Stuffs", leaving "Something Else". And then I was shocked because I accidentally deleted Type Center (It was the first one I made in LB class, but I put the wrong URL and I didn't know how to change the URL, so I made another one). Then I recovered the deleted blog, however, it had no posts.
And I panicked. I DELETED MY OWN BLOG, WHAT WILL I TELL MS. H? I almost sent an e-mail asking Ms. H to re-follow me, but then I checked it again, and it turns out that my classroom blog was "Everest - Ella's Writing Center", not "Type Center". Then I recovered it, and luckily, the posts were unharmed, and the followers list was still there, meaning my friends and Ms. H still has my blog address. I was so grateful I nearly fell onto the floor and rolled around. Now, I've successfully deleted blogs that I didn't use. Here's a picture of the two blogs that fooled me with their title (It was my fault actually...). Now, I know that I have to stay calm in times like these. At least, there's a good side in this accident (for me, anyway), and that is... I GOT A NEW TOPIC FOR MY SIXTH POST! (By the way, the sixth post is the one you're reading right now, in case you didn't know.)

Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons

Hello everyone! So... Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons. As you can see, there are four characters (each representing different movies) mixed together. By the way, that picture was not made by me, it was a fan art made by milady666 on deviantart.com. Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons is not a real movie, but I'm hoping it WILL become real one day, they're all my favorite Disney movies!

These movies are what I call the BIG FOUR, because they are all amazing! They have such different storylines, but when someone makes crossovers like these, they fit so perfectly! So as you can see, the four movies here are:

  • Rise of the Guardians: I REALLY love this movie, and if you haven't watched it until now (I can't believe you haven't), then WATCH IT. I'm sure you won't regret it. In this movie, Jack Frost is trying to get children to believe in him, while helping the four guardians save children from Pitch, the horrible spirit. This movie is filled with magical twists and turns, tests of courage and loyalty, and amazing motion pictures! I've watched it, like, maybe ten times by now? My siblings are always playing this movie as well, and I'm still not bored with it.
  • Tangled: Tangled, for me, is a great movie, and it was pretty fun to watch, the story line was amazing and it had really good animations as well (as expected of Disney, of course), but I didn't quite like the romance parts... However, I don't think that people would like it if the romance part were to be written off, so...
  • Brave: Brave was a really good movie as well, about the princess's mom turning into a BIG, fierce bear after eating the cake that had magical ingredients given to the princess by the wood-selling witch in the forest.
  • How to Train Your Dragon: How to Train Your Dragon is really cool! I love how the movie teaches us to be more open-minded, and to help others (even though dragons and vikings are different species ^-^) I like the action and the character build up here, and if you haven't watched it yet, then WATCH IT!
So... Out of the "big four", which movie have you watched? Which movie did you enjoy best?

5 Footprints Your Way

Hello, everyone, I am back with a new post. This time, I'm writing about one of my favorite topics: DINOSAURS. Here, I will tell you about the Big 5 Footprints: The Giant, The Brainy, The Worst at Hide-and-Seek, The Foot Whisperer, and The Movie Star, based on my research.

***

The largest known dinosaur is apparently the Argentinosaurus. And you can probably tell where they come from, can't you? Well, it turns out that they're about 130 feet long (around 39.6 m), and 70 feet tall (around 21 m)! Can YOU grow taller than that? And they're actually from the Sauropod family! Sauropods are dinosaurs with long, long necks, short feet, HUGE body, small head, and apparently, according to enchantedlearning.com,. they look like cows. They look so alike, I bet you can't find the difference.

***

Now, let's move on to the "Athena of Dinosaurs". Do you know Athena? Well if not, then I'll tell you. Athena is (was, actually) the goddess of wisdom. So she's gotta be pretty smart, right? So I guess you know what I'm about to tell you in this section? You guessed it right, I'm about to show you the brainiest, smartest dinosaur (Pushing Barney aside...).
And the smart dinosaur role goes to... Troodons! Troodons are dinosaurs that look like cretaceous birds. Troodons have big eyes, fast feet, and sharp, clear vision. All of this help them hunt for food, and according to scientists and paleontologists (people who study dinosaurs), they had the biggest brain. Oh, look! Here they are!

***

How do you know that a person is really bad at hiding? That's right, those who always get found first during hide-and-seek game. And now I'll tell you about the dinosaur who lost the hide-and-seek game... Where their fossils are the ones hiding, and the archaeologists are IT.
The first dinosaur fossil to be identified as a dinosaur fossil was the Megalosaurus, identified in 1824. Megalosaurus' fossil is actually not the first fossil to be found, there were lots of other fossils, but they were either burnt, thrown, or lost before they had the chance to be properly researched. Say hi to the first dino!

***

Who knows ostrich? Do you know what an ostrich is? An ostrich is an animal that runs VERY fast. In the dinosaur ages, they had their own ostrich. The Dinosaur Ostrich is called ornithomimids, and they can run up to 60 kilometers per hour! Even so, they are actually slower than ostriches, who can run at a speed up to 70 kilometres per hour! Aren't they fast?

***

Recognize what dinosaur that is? Yep! It's the Tyrannosaurus Rex, mainly known as the T-Rex! He's been in pretty much EVERYTHING! Babies' films (Example: Barney), to kids' cartoons (Example: The Land Before Time), documentaries (Example: Walking with Dinosaurs),  and even amazing movies such as Jurassic Park! They're even one of the dinosaurs that is most often chosen as characters (or opponents) in games! Isn't that amazing?

***
And I guess that pretty much concludes my kind of long post on the big 5 of dinosaurs. There were actually other factors I wanted to put in, such as The Tallest, The Heaviest, and others, but then I thought it might be too long. Anyway, for more dinosaurs, check this out!

None of us really know what changes,
Big or small, lie ahead...
One thing is certain:
Our journey's not over.
We can only hope that...
In some small way...
Our time here will be remembered.

3. characteristics of globalization
4. The impact of globalization to the national life and citizenship
